For the theme London is Open, I've decided to concentrate on the gardens and back yards of London through actual visits, where possible, taking photographs and making quick sketches which I will then rework in the studio. I want to focus on personalization – how all of us try to make our homes our own. I'd like to see how people look after their green spaces – even tiny ones – and how they humanize them and add personal touches.

I find the idea of private gardens very interesting because they reveal personal habits and behaviour; in the privacy of our own garden we can really be ourselves through choices such as planting a vegetable patch or doing DIY.  A garden can also be "public" i.e. seen by others. How then does it differ from a private garden in how we are perceived by others and how we want to be perceived?

How are these aspects expressed in Londoners' gardens?

I'd like to carry out this project in a way that fits my research methods and way of working so I've decided on an installation: a "Wunderkammer" or Cabinet of Curiosities – a collection of different types of work realized on site. The work will be an ensemble of diverse elements: photographs, sculpture and paintings on canvas or paper giving the impression of a work in progress that will take shape over the course of the residency.
