For the theme London is Open, I've decided to concentrateon the gardens andback yards ofLondon through actual visits, wherepossible, takingphotographs and makingquick sketches which I will then reworkin the studio. I want to focus onpersonalization – how all of ustry to make our homes our own. I'd like to see how people look aftertheir green spaces – even tiny ones – and how they humanize them and addpersonal touches.
I find the idea ofprivate gardensveryinteresting because they reveal personal habits and behaviour; in the privacy of our owngarden we can really be ourselves through choices such asplantinga vegetable patch or doing DIY. A garden can also be "public"i.e.seen by others. How then does it differ from a private garden in how we areperceivedby others and how we want to be perceived?
How are these aspects expressed in Londoners' gardens?
I'd like to carry out this project in a way that fits my research methods and way of working so I've decided on an installation: a "Wunderkammer" or Cabinet of Curiosities – a collection ofdifferenttypes of work realized on site. The work will be an ensemble of diverse elements: photographs, sculpture and paintings on canvas or paper giving the impression of a work in progress that will take shape over the course of the residency.
